On 28 June 2019, Rupert Butler, acting as direct access counsel, represented Graham Jones, a retired school-master from Eastbourne College, in his successful appeal to quash his conviction for historic sex abuse of a pupil.
Rupert argued that the conviction was unsafe because his client was unfairly prejudiced by being tried jointly with another teacher, even though there was no suggestion that either was aware of the other’s alleged offending.
