The Supreme Court has ruled that Rwanda is not a safe country for the UK to send asylum seekers to.

A 3-day hearing took place in October regarding the Home Office appealing the Court of Appeal’s decision in June 2023 that ruled Rwanda is not a safe country to send asylum seekers to. Earlier today, the Supreme Court upheld the judgment of the Court of Appeal.

Satvinder Juss commented, “What makes the Government’s position completely untenable in any future action, is the Supreme Court’s statement that Rwanda ‘had a history of acting in breach of the principle of non-refoulement, which had continued during the negotiation of the MEDP [the Rwanda policy] and following its execution, and that had in recent past failed to abide by similar assurances’.”

Satvinder Juss, acted for the claimants instructed by Twinwood Law solicitors.

The case is covered extensively in the press, find out more on the BBC website and via the Supreme Court press release.
