The members of 3 Hare Court are sad to report the passing of our former head of Chambers, Sir George Newman, who died on 9 June 2019, he was 77.

Sir George Newman was called to the Bar by Middle Temple in 1965 and took silk in 1981. During his career at the Bar, as well as being involved in international commercial cases, he was one of the leading practitioners in the Privy Council and was instructed on a number of occasions in matters of constitutional settlement and reform arising out of armed conflict, including events in Fiji and Trinidad and Tobago. Sir George served as a Justice of the High Court assigned to the Queen’s Bench Division from 1995 to 2007. He gained considerable experience in a wide range of judicial review cases and human rights matters as a Judge. Sir George has also served as a Judge of the Court of Appeal of the Bahamas and is currently a Judge of the Court of Appeal in the Cayman Islands. In 2009, Sir George was appointed the Chairman of the Security Vetting Appeals Panel (a Cabinet Office body). The Prime Minister appointed Sir George as a Surveillance Commissioner on 1 January 2010 and re-appointed him for a further three year term in January 2013. In January 2014, the Secretary of State for Defence appointed Sir George to conduct individual fatality investigations assigned to him from time to time, with his agreement, by the Ministry of Defence.

There is to be a private cremation and a memorial service later in the year.
