Matthew Happold is Professor of Public International Law at the University of Luxembourg.

Matthew has published widely across the field of public international law and has particular interests in international investment law, the settlement of international disputes, and economic sanctions. He is co-author, with Thomas Roe QC, of The Settlement of Investment Disputes under the Energy Charter Treaty (Cambridge University Press: 1st edition 2011, 2nd edition in preparation) and co-editor, with Paul Eden, of Economic Sanctions in International Law (Hart Publishing: forthcoming 2016).

As well as advising a range of organisations on various international law issues, Matthew has acted as counsel in cases before the European Court of Human Rights and the EU General Court. Recent cases include Sharif University of Technology v Council, Case T 181/13, judgment of 3 July 2014, and IRALCO v Council, Case T-158-13, judgment of 15 September 2015 (both successful challenges to EU restrictive measures).
