The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) promotes and upholds equality and human rights ideals and laws across England, Scotland and Wales.

The Commission was established by the Equality Act 2006 to encourage equality and diversity, eliminate unlawful discrimination, and protect and promote the human rights of everyone in Britain.

The Commission has powers to enforce equality legislation on age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation.

Members of the panel are the EHRC’s preferred providers of legal services from counsel, including representation and advice and support the EHRC’s advisory, influencing, regulatory and enforcement work across the equality and human rights spheres, including:

  • Litigation in domestic and European courts;
  • Compliance actions;
  • Inquiries, investigations and assessments;
  • Enforcement of the public sector equality duty;
  • Drafting codes of practice, consultation responses, briefings or guidance;
  • Monitoring compliance with UN treaties;
  • Appointment to the panel is for a four year term.
