We are proud to announce our recently appointed Chambers’ pro bono champion, Charlotte Pope-Williams. Charlotte is pro bono champion in association with the Bar’s National Pro Bono Charity Advocate (formerly known as the Bar Pro Bono Unit). Advocate is a charity that finds free legal assistance from volunteer barristers.

Charlotte’s role as Chambers’ pro bono champion involves providing support to those members of chambers who wish to undertake pro bono work, directing members to resources and alerting members to pro bono opportunities near and far.

Charlotte says “This role is vital in furthering access to justice for those who need free legal help. Many of us at 3 Hare Court are committed to pro bono work, frequently providing legal advice and representation free of charge. ”

Alongside providing free legal services, members of Chambers also support access to justice through participation in:

  • Advocate – Ben Channer as a case reviewer
  • Sport Resolutions’ Pro Bono Panel and UEFA’s Pro Bono Legal Advice Panel – Thomas Horton

Pro bono work has included:

  • Peter Knox KC and Rowan Pennington-Benton – involved in The Death Penalty project
  • Daniel Goldblatt – legal work for Advocate
  • Anna Lancy – legal work collaborating with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)
  • Claire Errington – legal work for Durham University’s Lawyers Without Borders and Syrian Legal Development Programs, volunteering in shelters for abused women in Cape Town, young offender institutions in the UK and Cape Town; running pro bono legal advice clinics and undertaking pro bono legal and human-rights related work in Cape Town.
  • Adam Riley – legal work in environmental judicial review challenge to airport runway construction in Barbuda; advising on merits and appellate procedure to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council through Advocate in a challenge to the mandatory death penalty from Trinidad and Tobago; and representing clients at the Employment Tribunal through Advocate, and at the Employment Appeal Tribunal with the North Kensington Law Centre.
  • Rupert Butler – representing David Bryant in quashing historic sexual abuse case

Like many other sets and law firms, we participate every year in the London Legal Walk, a fundraising event organised by The London Legal Support Trust, raising funds for much needed frontline free legal advice agencies.
