Rory Turnbull joined Chambers in October 2023 and accepts instructions in all of Chambers’ core practice areas.

As a courtroom advocate, he regularly appears in fast-track trials, interim applications, and preliminary hearings (including, in particular, possession hearings and bankruptcy petition hearings), and is also building up a busy paper-based practice.

Prior to joining Chambers, Rory worked as a paralegal at a leading London boutique litigation firm. Much of his work there was as part of a core team of barristers and solicitors in high value commercial disputes, often with an international element, and he gained particular experience of claims connected to the CIS countries and the British Virgin Islands.

Before being called to the Bar, Rory graduated with the top first in Theology from the University of Oxford in 2017, and stayed to read for a master’s, which he obtained with Distinction. He then completed the GDL and BPTC at City Law School as the recipient of both the Jules Thorn and the Queen Mother Scholarships from Middle Temple. In 2020, he won the Rosamund Smith Mooting Competition, and was awarded the Ede and Ravenscroft Prize for best speaker in the final.

Rory accepts instructions in relation to all aspects of commercial litigation.

He has a particular interest in insolvency work. During pupillage, Rory assisted with various insolvency matters, including in relation to claims brought under sections 238 or 239 of the Insolvency Act 1986. Since starting practice of his own, he is developing a busy paper-based practice in this area and is regularly instructed to appear in bankruptcy petition hearings at Court.

Property litigation forms a large part of Rory’s work, and he is developing a broad practice in this area.

He has gained experience in a range of landlord and tenant work, regularly appearing in Court or the First Tier Tribunal in possession hearings, claims relating to housing disrepair, or other lease disputes. He also accepts instructions to draft advices or statements of case in all aspects of property litigation, and has experience of claims brought under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975.

During pupillage, Rory gained experience of appeals to the Privy Council from the Bahamas and Trinidad and Tobago. He is building his expertise in this area, now that he is a tenant at 3 Hare Court.

Rory is also developing his practice in domestic public law and inquiries. Since starting his own practice, he has gained experience of inquest work.

Rory frequently acts in matters involving the Package Travel Regulations (1992 and 2018). He has particular experience of advising clients (for example on quantum or jurisdiction) and drafting statements of case, as well as representing clients at Court in trials and interim hearings.

His expertise in aviation disputes is growing, and Rory is regularly instructed in relation to claims brought under EC Regulation 261/2004 and the Montreal Convention. He also has experience of the CEDR Aviation Adjudication Scheme.

Rory has a busy personal injury practice and appears in fast-track trials very regularly. As well as trials, interim applications and case management conferences, outside of Court, he is building a busy paper-based practice in this area, drafting advices (including on quantum), statements of case, and schedules of loss.
