Howard Stevens QC has a broadly based common law practice, combining both first instance and appellate work.
Recent cases include a number of high profile inquests, including the Tunisia Inquests (he is also instructed in related civil proceedings) and the London Bridge / Borough Market Inquests; acting for ABTA both in the Supreme Court and on a reference to the CJEU; appeals to the Privy Council; catastrophic personal injury claims; and advising in connection with the Grenfell Tower disaster.
Howard’s appellate work is varied, and includes cases in the Supreme Court, Privy Council and Court of Appeal. He is frequently instructed by foreign governments, and has appeared in numerous applications and appeals in the Privy Council – in constitutional, public law, human rights, extradition and criminal cases, including a number of landmark cases. He also has experience of the CJEU, and has appeared before the Inter American Court of Human Rights in Costa Rica, acting for a state party to a treaty.
Much of Howard’s work has a cross-border dimension, including jurisdiction and conflict of law issues. He is regularly instructed by tour operators and insurers in connection with high profile litigation and advises the travel industry on a wide range of issues. He has extensive experience of catastrophic personal injury claims, group litigation, inquests and recovery actions, arising from disasters and accidents occurring in the UK and abroad. He is currently instructed in a number of cases involving variously severe brain injury, paralysis and amputation.
