Anna Gatrell joined Chambers as a tenant in October 2024 and accepts instructions in all of Chambers’ core practice areas. She has a keen interest in aviation, commercial and insolvency, employment, and travel law work, and generally in work with an international element.

In addition to led work, Anna regularly appears as sole counsel in trials and interim applications. She combines this with a strong paperwork practice which spans both drafting and advisory work.

Prior to joining Chambers, Anna held a number of senior roles, including a position as manager for a company in which she was responsible for international sales, client management, and business development. Alongside her legal studies, Anna competed in the Willem C Vis Commercial Arbitration Moot for Middle Temple, with the team ranking in the top 10% internationally.

Expertise

Anna is building an aviation practice and is familiar with both the Montreal Convention and EC Regulation 261/2004. She is also keen to explore commercial work within the aviation industry, including leasing and insurance disputes.

Alongside regularly drafting statements of case in aviation disputes, Anna frequently attends court to represent clients in trials and interim hearings.

Anna also assisted with Lunn v Antarctic Logistics Centre International (Pty) Ltd [2023] EWHC 2856 (KB), regarding service out of the jurisdiction in an aviation dispute (as a pupil of Christopher Loxton).

Anna has a broad interest in commercial and company law, and is developing her practice in both. She frequently advises on claims for breach of contract and has attended various court hearings in relation to contractual claims.

She has a particular interest in unfair prejudice petitions, and is currently instructed as junior counsel in an ongoing matter.

Previous experience with unfair prejudice claims includes assisting with Re Artemas Joseph Holdings Ltd [2024] EWHC 850 (ChD)), which concerned the sale of the company’s operating subsidiary by the majority to themselves at an undervalue (as a pupil of Christopher Loxton and Benjamin Channer).

Anna has also assisted with an ongoing unfair prejudice petition under s 994 of the Companies Act 2006, in relation to non-payment of dividends and breach of directors’ duties (as a pupil of Robert Strang).

Anna has drafted a number of statements of case in relation to shareholder disputes and breaches of shareholders’ agreements, including as sole counsel.

Recently, Anna has assisted with advising on the interpretation and scope of a clause within an arbitration agreement in a multi-million pound claim. She has also assisted in advising on the interpretation of the ICSID Convention.

Anna has a keen interest in employment law. She was successful following a five-day trial in the Employment Tribunal in which the Claimant was awarded more than £50,000 in respect of sex discrimination,  harassment, and victimisation, as well as for breach of contract (Ms N Chung v Whisky 1901 Ltd: 2205139/2023). She also succeeded in getting a costs order in the same case, following the filing of written submissions.

She has also acted in an advisory capacity in respect of a claim for wrongful dismissal, and in respect of prospects in relation to a potential appeal to the EAT.

Anna is developing her insolvency practice and frequently appears at winding-up and bankruptcy petitions, for both debtors and creditors. She also has experience with the preparation of validation orders, applications to annul, and the setting aside of statutory demands.

In an advisory capacity, Anna has advised as sole counsel in relation to a proof of debt, following judgment having been entered for a creditor in multi-million pound High Court proceedings.

Anna has assisted with a number of appeals to the Privy Council, including:

  • Great Lakes Reinsurance (UK) plc (as Subrogee of Modrono’s Bimini Place Ltd) (Appellant) v RAV Bahamas Ltd (Respondent) (Bahamas) [2024] UKPC 11 (as a pupil of Robert Strang).
  • Anton Bastian (Appellant) v The King (Respondent) (Bahamas) [2024] UKPC 14 (assisting Tom Poole KC, as a pupil).
  • Estate Management and Business Development Company Ltd (Appellant) v Junior Sammy Contractors Ltd (Respondent) (Trinidad and Tobago) [2024] UKPC 33 (as a pupil of Robert Strang)
  • Della Vallery Nolan nee Jude and another (Respondents) v Vandyke Jude (Appellant) (St Lucia) [2024] UKPC 22 (as a pupil of Robert Strang).

Anna maintains a keen interest in appeals to the Privy Council, and in constitutional and administrative law more generally. Anna frequently acts in matters involving the Package Travel Regulations, Athens Convention, and Montreal Convention. She regularly drafts pleadings in travel cases, as well as advising clients at all stages of proceedings.

Recent work includes appearing at trials in relation to breach of holiday contract claims, advising and drafting in relation to an injury sustained on board a cruise, and drafting a Part 20 claim following a ski accident.

Anna also has a busy domestic personal injury practice and has appeared in a number of fast-track trials. She is further familiar in dealing with a range of interim applications as well as with case management conferences. Her personal injury work also encompasses a paper-based practice, including providing advice on both liability and quantum, and drafting statements of case.

During pupillage, Anna assisted Katherine Deal KC in Yordanov v. Vasilev & Ors [2024] EWHC 1496 (KB), a case concerning questions of applicable law, liability, and contribution arising out of a fatal road traffic accident.
